Here is one who might help anyone who is traveling minimalist style and/or on a very strict budget but wish to maintain an acceptable level of cleanliness. So there is not enough space on little 26′ Tula for a proper shower so I have been forced to search for alternative options to stay clean. One option I will do as soon as I get to warm weather, and can shower outside, is install one of those hand pump pressurized insecticide sprayers with a little shower head. Until then I will be on the search for free/cheap showers.
So far the best option I have found is a gym with showers who will let me do a drop-in workout in exchange for doing some work for them like cleaning the windows or wiping down equipment. Most of the time however, the gym won’t go for that and I have to pay a 5, 10, or 15 dollar drop in fee. Depending how long I have gone without a shower or real workout is how much I’m willing to pay :-).
A lot of marinas have showers for transients but I am reluctant to pay $50+ for a transient slip so I either try and learn the code to the showers…. Or see if they will include a shower in my fuel fill-up bill. So far neither has worked very well so I seek other options but in Annapolis the fee at the city dock for a shower was $1. That was the best $1 I have ever spent.
Sink showers have become common in coffee shops and they work well enough. The last resort is a wipe-down on the boat with baby wipes or a soapy wash cloth. You would never know difference!
We saw your boat at the Oriental dock…our favorite design above all. Sorry we did not get to meet you as we were having a very busy week at the loft. Wondered where you were from and will read your blog to find out more. We are from RI and have been here for 8 years.
Always looking for our Tula.
Travel well….
Hey! I should have stopped into your shop (I prob could have used some minor repairs on my jib) but I had so little time to explore that amazing town and meet all the fascinating people! I was warned to not stay too long or I will fall into the Blackbeard curse and never leave. But I know I will be back through soon. I have gotten so many compliments on Tula while I was there, I’m glad you like her. If you haven’t seen already checkout the “the ship” page on this blog to see what she looke like when I first got her, I think you will find it interesting. I will be sure to stop in and introduce myself when I am back in Oriental! Just curious, how did you find my blog?
Wow…I never did check back on your blog so I never saw your gracious reply.
I think what I did was to simply do a google search for ‘SV Tula ‘ and you site was in the list.
I have not checked out your web site but I just bookmarked it and will do so soon.
Have you been back through town ? We are still here and still have Hodges Street Sail Repair to keep us busy.
Gil
PS: Oriental, NC now has public shower for folks who stay at either of their two free docks.
