Eleuthera has been one of our favorite islands thus far. It’s cliffs, waves, and contrasting water colors make it extremely different from many of the other islands in the Bahamas. There is enough to do on this island to keep you entertained for weeks. However, If you are only here for a short time then make sure to check these five things to do on Eleuthera off your list.
Top 5 things to do on Eleuthera
1.Queens Bath
If you would like to sit back and relax in warm clear water with a beautiful view then the Queens Bath is somewhere you DO NOT want to miss. The Queens Bath is a naturally formed series of pools on the Northern Atlantic side of Eleuthera. These pools were formed from years of waves crashing on the side of the island. They are filled with crystal clear water and many different small fish species. Once the water has settled at lower tides the sun heats it up and the pools turn into a hot tub. This is a great place to bring lunch and hang for the afternoon. It is recommended to go at medium to low tides. Higher tides combined with big waves can make Queens Bath dangerous with the strong surge of water pushing over the rocks.
While you are here travel about another half mile north and check out the Glass Window bridge to see the crazy contrasting colors of the deep blue Atlantic meeting the clear waters from the Bight of Eleuthera. You will not be disappointed.
2.Surfers Beach
If surfing crystal clear, warm, perfect waves is your thing then grab your board and head down to Surfers Beach. It has been said to be one of the only breaks that has become less crowded over the years because Eleuthera can be harder than other surf destinations to get to. This means you can enjoy these perfect waves with very little crowds. If the warm clear water isn’t enough to draw you in then do a bit more reading and you will find out that experts compare this gem of a wave to Hawaii’s finest.
3.Sapphire Hole
If you like the adrenaline rush of jumping off a cliff into mysterious depths then definitely make a pit stop at Sapphire Blue Hole. It gets its name for a reason. This blue hole is not deep dark blue like most but bright and almost unreal. Jumping in is not the only rush you will get at the sapphire blue hole you also have to figure out how to get up. There is a rope for assistance but be careful!
4.Snorkel
Whether you are looking for dinner or just admiring the underwater world you will be blown away by the sea life around Eleuthera. Fallen rock from the island makes gorgeous coral towers that have become home to an abundance of different fish species. We saw plentiful grouper, snapper, hogfish, and a few friendly sharks. One of our favorite places to dive was Alabaster Bay but there are numerous spots all along the island. If you happen to find a conch or two try out our Conch Salad Recipe 🙂
5.Cathedral Cave
Rock Sound is home to yummy restaurants, an ocean hole great for doing laps, and most memorable for us was Cathedral Cave. It is located behind the boiling hole and is great for people that love to explore. You enter from a wooden ladder that brings you to the bottom. You will get a breathtaking view as soon as you arrive The roots cascade down from the trees on top of the cave and rays of light beam through the ceiling. Look closely and you may also see a bat or two.
There are many other great things to see and explore but these were our top 5 things to do here on Eleuthera.
Enjoy, and remember “No other Island will keep you smilin’ like Eleuthera”!
Nice article! We are researching a land trip to an out island – do you have any recommendations for towns that have rental homes on the water and walkable to restaurants / shops? Did Elbow cay last year and loved it!
