I pulled into Cape May, the Southern tip of New Jersey around 3:30pm right before it got dark. I anchored next to the Coast Guard station and began to make dinner. Eating in the cabin it was cold, dark, and lonely. I was getting pretty bummed being cold and alone for so long and began to let my mind wonder about other options if I decided to end my trip there. The next morning it was still chilly but the sun was out and my moral was restored walking around the victorian town. I have been to Cape May for two lifeguard national tournaments and it was really neat seeing the same place in a different way, a different time of year, and arriving and departing by sailboat. By noon the tide turned in Delaware bay and I was soon riding the 2 knot current back north a bit to the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. I have been reading about how rough and nasty the Delaware bay can get and I guess it was worth having to use my engine the whole way to be in glassy calm water. There are some big ships that navigate the bay so I set my course to stay outside the shipping channel for the most part. I arrived to the mouth of the C&D Canal well after dark and anchored behind a large sandbar. On the other side was a large freighter ship also anchored, I guess waiting for daylight or the tide to change to transit the canal.

A nuclear power plant looking like a space station on Delaware Bay. From what I’ve read, I’m not upset about transiting most of the bay at night and missing the industrial scenery.
