Once a Trawler Owner, Always a Trawler Lover…

We are sailors now, but our heads still turn at a good looking Trawler! We always enjoy touring the insides of boats, especially when we are looking for new decoration or layout inspiration. It is also fun to see how other cruisers utilize their limited space to make it feel more like home. Lucky for us, we were able to get an inside look of the committee boat while we were competing in the Corsair Nationals Regatta in Sarasota. This Trawler was built by a man named Charlie and his brothers, along with some outside help. Charlie was kind enough to invite us over for a boat tour, which we will now share with you!

Roseate: The Home Built Trawler

Trawler

When we first caught eye of the docked Roseate, we couldn’t help but inquire about her. At first glance, we knew this Trawler had a unique exterior, but it wasn’t until we met her owner Charlie that we found out about all the unique history that makes up the boat’s interior.

Roseate was built over a span of four years and most of her wood was recovered from the bottom of the Apalachicola River over 100 years ago. The cypress logs would sink to the river floor and divers would dive down to pull them up. With the help of Charlie’s brother milling the logs, Charlie recycled the cypress and varnished them for his Trawler interior.

As we were touring the spacious interior, we came across one of our favorite features in the cabin. Built out of Southern Yellow Pine, is Charlie’s wine rack. The pine originated from the biggest pine tree on record in Florida and is said to be over 175 years old – how crazy! The old pine tree was located at Charlie’s grandfather’s house and since it had recently died he salvaged the wood to become a major piece of his Trawler!

Another one of our favorite features of the Trawler are the floors and countertops. The floors were uniquely created from cork and plywood. Charlie’s reasoning for using these supplies were because they are “easy and cheap”. When you can get style at an inexpensive cost – we say that is a win win situation! You can buy a square for about a dollar at Home Depot 🙂

Floors of Roseate epoxied and made from cork + plywood.

Countertops also made from cork.
